Certain Points To Be Remembered
If you have recently been to the doctor in case you fell ill or on a routine checkup, you
will still remember that the doctor would have most likely carried out a blood cholesterol test. This is a routine
test that the doctors prescribe to their patients in general and to the obese ones in particular. The benefit of
the test is that the doctors tend to know what levels of cholesterol are present in the blood
stream and what course of action should the doctors take to address the issue that yields suitable results
for the patient. Carrying out such a test can prove out to be vital in preventing dangerous diseases such as
strokes, heart attacks and diseases such as diabetes may be prevented beforehand.
It is worth mentioning over here that the term ‘cholesterol’ does not itself point to the existence
of a single substance, rather to the collection of mainly three substances which are LDL (also known as Low Density
Lipoproteins), HDL (also known as High Density Lipoproteins) and triglycerides (made by combining three
fatty acids to a glycerol molecule). Thus, the blood cholesterol test would be designed to measure one,
two or all three components of the cholesterol.
The tests that measure the level of cholesterol are divided into two main groups: the random cholesterol
tests and the Fasting Cholesterol tests.
The random cholesterol tests are designed to check the cholesterol levels of a person at a random point in
time and then judge the level of LDL, HDL and triglycerides present in the blood stream. Although such a test is
easy as it could be carried out at any point in time and that there is no special preparation required for it, the
results of the test can vary and be misrepresentative at certain times. For example, if a person, whose LDL levels
are at normal levels usually and has just taken an occasional fatty meal, the random test would show high LDL
levels and indicate that the person needs medical care, whereas in fact he does not. That is why most doctors
advise a Fasting Cholesterol test to be carried after having a random test.
The advantage of a Fasting Cholesterol test is that it provides the most
realistic results with regards to cholesterol in the body. The rule in the Fasting Cholesterol test is that the
patient so taking the test must abstain from eating, drinking and taking medications for at least nine hours before
the test is to be performed. This prevents the chance of any misrepresentation of LDL figures, which are considered
bad fats and are also dependent upon the intake of food. It is therefore better to take a very light meal at night
and arrive for the Fasting Cholesterol early in the morning.
Through this test, the doctors will now be able to substantiate what the true picture is as
regards to the real cholesterol content of the person. Thus, if the levels are high, the doctors will advise
on the proper medication that is to be taken by the patient, in case the levels are low, the doctors will advise on
the proper diet to raise cholesterol levels.
